Dry winter air can cause health problems as well as become very annoying, because dry air can dehydrate the body very fast, draining out the fluids in the body. To counter the out side chill air of winter people use room heaters, and other air conditioners which suck out the humidity present in the atmosphere at home. This leads to a dry and parched condition of the throat, nose and skin in particular the lips.
The dryness causes various health problems including dehydration, increase in the body temperature and a general lack of resistance to combat infections that arise during the winter season.
Some tips to overcome the problems during dry winter are: -
Intake of sufficient amount of fluids like, fresh fruit juices, plain water and hot soups & broths is recommended. Caffeine and products containing caffeine, soft drinks should be avoided. Intake of water maintains the balance of fluids in the body and keeps the skins temperature normal preventing a feeling of fever.
Avoid very hot water bath, because hot water has tendency to dry up very fast, which causes skin irritation, and make it scaly. Frequent short showers with lukewarm water can keep the body temperature normal. For bathing use mild soaps or mild detergents with glycerin content.
To protect from dry cold air out side people tend to use room heaters that have a tendency to dehumidify the atmosphere in the room, which in turn may lead to dehydration. For this it is better to use humidifiers attached to the heaters. But too much of humidifying in the room can make the room stuffy and damp. This also is a problem to cope with. So select humidifiers that can provide 35% to 50% of the humidity.
Moisturizers need to be used for skin and face regularly. Cosmetics containing moisturizers should be selected. One can also use moisturizers for hands feet and lips.
Saline nasal sprays available over the counter can be used to lessen the nasal irritation caused by drying up of the nostrils.
Cucumber slices can be placed on the eyelids to relieve strained and burning in the eyes. Clean Cotton soaked in cologne can also be used for this purpose. By taking warm water and putting herbal oils and mild soap, and then keep feet in it can reduce burning sensation and dryness in the feet. When going out, care should be taken to protect the ears and nose from being exposed to dry air. Dry air entering the nose and the year can cause irritating and running nose
